Jobs and the Economy
Ensuring that every American has a good paying job needs to be Congress’ top priority.
We need to create and save jobs while investing in the long-term growth of our economy. Tom is working to help middle class families weather the storm of the economic downturn. He’s also working to restart both consumer credit and commercial credit, like loans for small and medium businesses.
Tom is fighting to expand contracting opportunities for small businesses in New Mexico, which make up 95.7% of all employers in the state. His new legislation would help more veteran and minority-owned small businesses secure federal contracts, and make the reporting requirements for those awarded more transparent.
New Mexico has the unique opportunity to be a leader in the clean energy economy. For every $1 million invested in clean energy, 16.7 jobs are created. With year-round sunshine and a bounty of wind, we have an opportunity to create thousands of new jobs in New Mexico. Tom is fighting for legislation that provides investments in clean energy and incentives for our entrepreneurs to develop the next generation of energy-capturing technology.
In creating good paying jobs, we need to make sure that those jobs are available for all American workers. That’s why Tom’s fought hard to end discrimination in the workplace.
Tom is a long-time supporter of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the very first bill that President Obama signed into law. He also supports the Paycheck Fairness Act to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work, and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which extends federal employment discrimination protections to sexual orientation and gender identity.
