Las Cruces Sun-News: Trump’s border wall order elicits praise, concern in southern NM
A pair of immigration-related orders signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump — calling in part for beginning construction on a border wall and withholding federal funds to “sanctuary cities” — were met with praise and disappointment by residents and leaders of southern New Mexico.
For some, the proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border will amount to a symbol of deep division, isolation and wasted money. Some called the order targeting sanctuary cities a “Band-Aid” solution to a complex issue that requires comprehensive reform and collaboration with other nations.
For others, the orders exemplify how Trump is taking immediate action to fulfill his campaign promises. For the president’s supporters, his actions on Wednesday were the beginning steps of creating safer, more secure communities. (cont.)
