Veterans
Thank You for Your Service
Our country’s veterans answered the call of duty and have fought to protect our freedoms. I stand with all Americans in thanking them for their service, and honor the memory of those we have lost on the battlefield. Our nation stays strong and secure thanks to those who wear the uniform.
Securing America’s Promise
I believe it is a moral imperative to provide our veterans with the care they need and opportunities they deserve when they get home. My father, Stewart, served as a waist gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II, instilling in me the moral responsibility we have to those who serve our nation in uniform. Through my work in the Congress, including eight years serving on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I have worked hard on behalf of our veterans.
Passing a New G.I. Bill
When my father returned from World War II, he was able to improve his life because of a G.I. Bill scholarship. The G.I. Bill was one of the most important programs implemented after World War II. The original G.I. Bill helped millions of returning veterans transition quickly into successful and prosperous careers. I co-sponsored and have fought for the New G. I. Bill for soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. We know it is the right thing to do – and we also know it works. They have sacrificed for us, and they deserve first-class benefits.
Expand and Modernize the Veterans’ Administration Health Care System
Our returning veterans deserve the same health care benefits that members of Congress enjoy. Our Veterans’ Administration must be modernized and improved so that when we start bringing more and more troops home from Iraq, they will receive the highest quality care. I helped to pass the largest funding increase in the 77-year history of the Veteran’s Administration to address health problems like traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. As Senator, I will continue to ensure our veterans receive the health care they deserve.
