Las Cruces Sun-News: Extension of commercial zone aims to increase business for Cruces

The new Border Commercial Zone, extended from 25 to 55 miles, took effect last week. That means people from Mexico who are Border Crossing Card holders, can travel as far as Las Cruces without going through extra processing to obtain a Form I-94, which includes a secondary inspection, fingerprinting, more paperwork, etc. Border Crossing Cards allow holders from Mexico to limited entry into the border area.

“Extending the Border Commercial Zone to include additional communities in southern New Mexico is a smart decision,” Sen. Tom Udall, D-NM, said in a release last month when the final approval came through. “With this extension, we can focus our border resources on catching more dangerous criminals and drug traffickers while providing a key boost to our economies.”
