Mountain View Telegraph: Fiber optic project under way

It’s not often that New Mexico’s two U.S. senators are in Moriarty at the same time. But then again, Sen. Tom Udall and Sen. Martin Heinrich wanted to be on hand last Friday to cut the ribbon for a $40 million project that so far has installed 51 miles of fiber optic cable in the Estancia Valley.

The project was started last year by ENMR-Plateau and was paid for two grants totaling about $28 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The rest of the cost was absorbed by Plateau. Once complete, the project will include about 74 miles of fiber optic lines.

The work increases the availability of broadband service to the area.

Udall said broadband will mean everything for education, telemedicine and economic development. The United States ranks 15th among nations in broadband development.
