Santa Fe New Mexican: Udall: Sharp cuts would devastate state’s labs, bases

New Mexico’s senior senator, speaking at his first U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee meeting in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, warned that automatic cuts to the federal budget, threatened by an impasse in Congress, would devastate the national research labs and military installations in the state.

“I believe the sequester’s across-the-board cuts, including [a] 9.4 percent cut facing the National [Nuclear] Security Administration weapons account, will hamper the important stockpile stewardship work across the country,” said U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M.

Danny Werfel, controller of the White House Office of Management and Budget, responded that the cuts could mean $46 million less for Los Alamos National Laboratory, requiring hiring freezes and furloughs for some employees.
